Prerequisites: Choosing the Right SSD

Before starting your migration, you need to choose an SSD that is compatible with your system and large enough to hold your data. Here is what to consider.

SATA vs NVMe vs M.2

If your computer has an M.2 NVMe slot, an NVMe SSD will deliver the fastest possible performance, with sequential read speeds of 3,500 MB/s or more. If your system only supports SATA, a 2.5-inch SATA SSD is still a massive upgrade over an HDD, with speeds around 550 MB/s. Check your motherboard manual or manufacturer's website to determine which interfaces are available. Remember that M.2 is a form factor, and some M.2 slots only support SATA protocol, not NVMe.

Capacity Planning

Your SSD must be large enough to hold all the used data on your source drive, not the total drive capacity. If your 1TB HDD only contains 300GB of actual data, a 500GB SSD will work perfectly. Download and Install Macrium Reflect

Connect Your New SSD

Connect your destination SSD to your computer. For desktop PCs, install the SSD in an available drive bay or M.2 slot. For laptops, use a USB-to-SATA adapter or USB NVMe enclosure to connect the SSD externally during the migration process.

Select Clone This Disk

4K Alignment and Automatic Partition Resizing

Two of the most critical technical aspects of SSD migration are partition alignment and partition resizing. Both affect whether your SSD delivers its full performance potential after the migration.

Why 4K Sector Alignment Matters

SSDs read and write data in 4-kilobyte pages. When your partitions start at addresses that are multiples of 4K, every read and write operation maps cleanly to a single page on the SSD. If partitions are misaligned, a single logical read can straddle two physical pages, forcing the SSD controller to perform two read operations instead of one. This misalignment can reduce performance by 20 to 40 percent, which means you are not getting the full speed you paid for.

Verify TRIM Is Enabled

Open Command Prompt as administrator and run "fsutil behavior query DisableDeleteNotify". If the result is 0, TRIM is active. Windows 10 and 11 enable TRIM by default for recognized SSDs, but it is worth confirming after a migration.

Disable Scheduled Defragmentation

Windows automatically detects SSDs and replaces defragmentation with TRIM optimization. However, if your SSD was cloned from an HDD, Windows may still have defrag scheduled. Open Defragment and Optimize Drives to verify your SSD shows as a solid state drive with optimization (not defragmentation) scheduled.

Adjust Power Settings

In Power Options, ensure your power plan does not aggressively turn off the SSD. In Advanced power settings, set "Turn off hard disk after" to 0 (Never) to prevent unnecessary spin-down cycles that some SSD controllers handle poorly.

Update SSD Firmware

Check your SSD manufacturer's website or management tool for firmware updates. Updated firmware can improve performance, stability, and compatibility. Most manufacturers provide free tools: Samsung Magician, Crucial Storage Executive, WD Dashboard, and similar.

Troubleshooting SSD Migration Issues

Most migrations complete without issues, but here are solutions to the most common problems.

SSD Not Booting After Migration

Enter your BIOS/UEFI settings and change the boot order to prioritize the new SSD. If your original drive used Legacy BIOS mode (MBR), but your system now expects UEFI (GPT), you may need to change the boot mode in BIOS settings. Macrium Reflect preserves the partition scheme during cloning.

GPT vs MBR Mismatch

If your source HDD uses MBR partitioning and your system requires GPT (common on newer UEFI systems), Macrium Reflect can handle the conversion. Ensure your BIOS is set to the correct boot mode: UEFI for GPT drives, Legacy/CSM for MBR drives.

Drive Not Detected in BIOS

Verify the SSD is properly seated in its slot or connected via cable. For M.2 NVMe drives, ensure you are using an NVMe-compatible M.2 slot (not a SATA-only M.2 slot). Check for BIOS updates that add compatibility for newer NVMe controllers.

Slower Than Expected Performance

Verify TRIM is enabled by running 'fsutil behavior query DisableDeleteNotify' in Command Prompt. A result of 0 means TRIM is active. Also check that your SSD is connected to the fastest available interface (NVMe slot instead of SATA if the drive supports it).
